TMEA 2008- Review, Comments from people trying out instruments and pics
Quality of all the instruments- amazing quality and i have not seen this kind of craftmanship in years and i have been doing this for 42 years now.
Trombones-
the 3 favorite were the .547 Bolero, Slokar performance and the .500 Bart van Lier
Slides were unreal in the ease and no place did they drag. slides were flawless. i had a guy playing for 30 min on Thurs morning at 9 am and took out a spritzer and i told him that wouldnt do any good cause the slides didnt have cream on them and he couldnt believe he had been playing on dry slides.
common comments were lightweight instruments and very even throughout the whole range and sweet sound and notes slotted well in all ranges. it was hard to get a bad comment on any of the bones.
Bass trombone had a 10.25 in bell and had a very tight sound for a large bell. One high school kid really made it project and just was great on it. It made me wonder what he was doing different.
the Bart van Lier Jazz bones are so sweet and were a hit. i had everyone there compare the .500 w the nickel silver bell to the the 50s Conn Constellation. not just one person but many. amazing how it projected and sounded huge for a .500 bore.
I sold the .525 bore 134 and the guy absolutely loved it. sweet sound and just blew easy.
the 480-.488- great lead bone w a sweet sound and prjection
.547's
KH 547- very similar to Bach and in the same price range. triggers are amazing and the Germans really know how to make a rotary valve. great sound and very even
Ergonomics on the Slokar and Bolero are amazing. fits the hand well and the rotors were quiet and really well built.
Bolero- The hit of the show- everyone said it played like a 50s Con 88H and had the old school loop on the trigger and just had one sweet projected sound. slotted well and very even.
Slokar Performance- brighter than the Bolero and just really good tone. Trumpets- the trumpets were so decent that i had 3 trumpet pros in 3 different areas dragging their dealer over to get price lists and get them to sell the instruments in their area. Had one in MO, Austin and Lubbock/Amarillo area interested. Bb's
3 favorite hands down were the Sella (intermediate), Topline Lead w no braces on the leadpipe and the Malte Burba Universal II was the most favorite of all of them.
all trumpets had stainless valves w reg water slides cept amado water keys on the 2 Topline trumpets. Valves were short throw and just very fast. i had a guy pull the 2nd valve tuning slide and push the valve and turn it on all the trumpets and said every one was in perfect alignment and that was amazing to see since most these days had to be re-aligned. everyone that picked up the trumpets said, this is light and still could take the volume.
Sella- just a great trumpet and compared to Bach Strads at a price lower then the strad. stainless valves and silverplated totally inside and outside, inlcuding all slides and valve casings. heavier than all the other trumpets but well liked in the way it played.

Malte Burba Universal with rounded and bach style tuning slides and had extra heavy valve bottom caps.
no one disliked this trumpet- darker sound, even and very slotted. Had a trumpet player out of Houston, Johan, just fell in love with it and called it exceptional and the most slotted he had played in years. we put the heavy weight valve caps on it and he said it now had all the punch he would ever need for a lead trumpet in any group.
Topline- liked it but not as much as the lead w/o the braces
Classicum C silver plated trumpet- was told it was older school short bell C and just was a sweet trumpet and very good in all aspects. it was pricey but they said it was well worth it for the way it played.
Piccolo- P54 copy and they said it played as good or better than the P54.
Great show and i had a ton of fun talking to everyone.
